silk, mirror, chain hoist, iron

The installation by Susanne Hopmann revolves around the perception of reality. In a theatrical mise-en-scène, she enables a huge silk curtain to develop a life of its own. Hung up on a complex and proto-industrial looking metal chain construction the fine fabric moves slightly as if by an invisible hand. The view from the luxurious curtain onto the mirrored floor below appears as a gaping abyss. The artwork confronts the observer with a “fourth wall”. Since one cannot see anything more either behind or in front of the curtain, our perception of reality is provoked. Thereby the human desire to understand is subtly lead ad absurdum.
